FIRE Calculator
How many years until you can retire early?
What Is FIRE?
FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) means accumulating enough investments that the returns cover your living expenses. The standard approach uses the 4% rule — you need 25× your annual expenses invested.
The Savings Rate Is Everything
Your savings rate (the percentage of income you save) is the single biggest factor determining how quickly you reach FIRE. At a 50% savings rate, you can retire in roughly 17 years. At 70%, about 8.5 years. At 30%, about 28 years.
What This Calculator Does
This calculator estimates when you could achieve financial independence based on your savings rate, investment returns, and target annual spending in retirement. It is designed for anyone pursuing Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE).
How the Calculation Works
It uses the 4% safe withdrawal rate (the Trinity Study methodology) to calculate your FIRE number (25x annual expenses), then projects your investment growth to determine when your portfolio reaches that target.
Common Scenarios
Spending £30,000/year requires a £750,000 portfolio. Saving £1,500/month at 7% returns could reach this in about 20 years. Reducing spending by £500/month lowers your target to £625,000 and accelerates FIRE by 3-4 years.
