How Marriage Allowance Works

If one partner earns under £12,570 and the other is a basic rate taxpayer (earning under £50,270), you can transfer £1,260 of the lower earner's personal allowance to the higher earner. This saves the higher earner £252 per year (£1,260 × 20%).

Eligibility

You must be married or in a civil partnership. The lower earner must earn under £12,570. The higher earner must be a basic rate taxpayer (earning under £50,270). You can also backdate claims for up to 4 years, potentially worth up to £1,260 total.

What This Calculator Does

This calculator shows whether you're eligible for the Marriage Allowance and how much tax you could save by transferring 10% of the personal allowance. It is designed for married couples and civil partners where one partner earns less than the personal allowance.

How the Calculation Works

The lower earner can transfer £1,260 of their personal allowance to their partner, saving the recipient up to £252/year. The recipient must be a basic-rate taxpayer (earning under £50,270).

Common Scenarios

If one partner earns £10,000 and the other earns £35,000, the Marriage Allowance saves £252/year. You can also claim for up to 4 previous tax years, potentially receiving a lump sum of over £1,000.
