P11D

A form detailing benefits in kind (company car, private medical, etc.) provided by your employer. These are taxable and affect your tax code.

How P11D Benefits Affect Your Tax

A P11D is a form your employer submits to HMRC listing any benefits in kind you received during the tax year. Common benefits include company cars, private medical insurance, interest-free loans, and gym memberships.

The value of benefits on your P11D is added to your taxable income. HMRC typically collects the tax by adjusting your tax code for the following year, spreading the cost across your monthly pay. For example, a company car benefit of £5,000 would increase your annual tax bill by £1,000-2,000 depending on your tax rate.

Some employers operate a “payrolling benefits” scheme, where the tax on benefits is deducted through PAYE each month. In this case, the benefit may not appear on a P11D. Check your payslip for details.

How P11D Works in Practice

A P11D is a form your employer submits to HMRC detailing any taxable benefits in kind (BIKs) and expenses you received during the tax year. Common items include company cars, private medical insurance, and beneficial loans. The taxable value of these benefits is added to your income and taxed through an adjustment to your tax code.

Practical Tips

If you receive benefits in kind, you should receive a copy of your P11D by 6 July following the tax year end. Check it carefully — errors are common, particularly with company car BIK calculations. Your tax code for the following year will be adjusted to collect tax on these benefits throughout the year. If you have a company car, the BIK value depends on the car's list price and CO2 emissions. Related Topics

Payrolling of benefits (taxing BIKs through the payroll rather than by tax code adjustment) is becoming more common and may eventually replace the P11D system. This gives employees more accurate month-by-month tax deductions.
