How British wealth is built

Net worth in these figures is everything a household owns minus everything it owes. The ONS composition is revealing: net property wealth makes up 40% of GB household wealth and private pensions 35% — three quarters of British wealth is housing and pensions, not cash. Net financial wealth (savings and investments minus debts) is just 14%, with physical possessions the remaining 10%.

The age gradient is enormous. Median wealth rises 33-fold between the youngest band (£15,200 at 16 to 24) and the peak (£502,500 at 65 to 74), because the two big engines — mortgage repayment and pension compounding — both need decades to run. The single biggest step is between the 45–54 band (£301,900) and the 55–64 band (£496,500): £194,600 of median wealth built in peak-earning years.

Wealth is right-skewed, so medians (the typical household) sit well below means (the arithmetic average). We quote medians throughout, matching the ONS headline measure. On the income side, someone on the UK median salary of about £35,000 takes home £28,720 a year in 2025/26 (thresholds frozen to 2028) — converting income into wealth is what the pages above are really about.
