Higher-rate taxpayer (£60,000 of other income), 2026/27 disposals, no earlier BADR claims, conditions for relief met.
How the relief works
Business Asset Disposal Relief taxes qualifying gains at 18% for disposals on or after 6 April 2026 (14% in 2025/26, 10% before 6 April 2025) on up to £1 million of gains over your lifetime. Without it, gains are taxed at 18% only within your remaining basic rate band and at 24% above - so for most sellers the relief turns 24% into 18%, worth up to £60,000.
The £3,000 annual exempt amount comes off the gains taxed at the highest rate first, and gains that qualify for BADR use any basic rate band you have left before other gains do. The conditions - 5% of shares and votes and being an officer or employee for 2 years for company shares, or 2 years' ownership for a sole trader or partner - are set out on each page.
