The Scottish main grade teacher range for the 2026/27 school year, from the probationer point to the top of the scale, under the SNCT pay agreement covering 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2027.
Is There a 2026/27 Teacher Pay Scale for Scotland Yet?
Yes — and unlike England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the Scottish 2026/27 figures are already published and already in force. Teacher pay in Scotland is set by the Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers (SNCT) — not the STRB — and the SNCT's current agreement (circular SNCT 25/106) runs from 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2027 in three steps:
- a 4% uplift at every point from 1 August 2025;
- rising to 4.25% with effect from 1 April 2026;
- a further 3.25% uplift at every point from 1 August 2026 — the column in bold below, which is what Scottish teachers are paid for the 2026/27 school year.
All three columns are transcribed from the statutory salary tables in Appendix 2.1 of the SNCT Handbook (revised November 2025). The agreement also carries a re-opener clause for the second year, so a further change before 31 July 2027 is possible but none has been made.
Scotland Main Grade Scale and Take-Home Pay
The Scottish scale looks nothing like England's. There is no M1–M6 and no upper pay scale: Scotland has a single six-point main grade scale, starting at point 0 for the probation year (the Teacher Induction Scheme year) and topping out at point 5. Progression is one point per year, so a Scottish teacher reaches the top of the scale in six years — in England the climb through M1–M6 and then UPS1–UPS3 typically takes eleven or more.
| Point | From 1 Aug 2025 | From 1 Apr 2026 | From 1 Aug 2026 | Take-home/yr | Take-home/mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0 (probationer) | £34,938 | £35,022 | £36,159 | £29,527 | £2,461 |
| 1 | £41,916 | £42,018 | £43,383 | £34,656 | £2,888 |
| 2 | £44,295 | £44,400 | £45,843 | £35,945 | £2,995 |
| 3 | £46,866 | £46,977 | £48,504 | £37,276 | £3,106 |
| 4 | £49,839 | £49,959 | £51,582 | £38,893 | £3,241 |
| 5 (maximum) | £52,614 | £52,740 | £54,453 | £40,501 | £3,375 |
Take-home is after Scottish income tax and National Insurance on 2026/27 rates, before pension — see the tax and pension notes below. There is no London-weighting equivalent: one national scale covers the whole country, with a Distant Islands Allowance on top for island postings.
Chartered Teacher Spine
The SNCT still publishes a six-point chartered teacher spine, above the main grade maximum. The chartered teacher programme was closed to new entrants years ago, but teachers who reached the spine keep their point — it remains part of the statutory tables:
| Point | From 1 Aug 2025 | From 1 Apr 2026 | From 1 Aug 2026 | Take-home/yr | Take-home/mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | £54,243 | £54,375 | £56,142 | £41,447 | £3,454 |
| 2 | £56,070 | £56,205 | £58,032 | £42,505 | £3,542 |
| 3 | £57,360 | £57,498 | £59,367 | £43,253 | £3,604 |
| 4 | £59,727 | £59,871 | £61,818 | £44,625 | £3,719 |
| 5 | £62,115 | £62,265 | £64,290 | £46,010 | £3,834 |
| 6 | £64,503 | £64,659 | £66,759 | £47,392 | £3,949 |
Principal Teacher Scale
Promoted posts with subject or pastoral responsibility are paid on the eight-point principal teacher scale. The school sets which points a post spans; movement within the post's range is annual:
| Point | From 1 Aug 2025 | From 1 Apr 2026 | From 1 Aug 2026 | Take-home/yr | Take-home/mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | £57,360 | £57,498 | £59,367 | £43,253 | £3,604 |
| 2 | £59,727 | £59,871 | £61,818 | £44,625 | £3,719 |
| 3 | £62,115 | £62,265 | £64,290 | £46,010 | £3,834 |
| 4 | £64,503 | £64,659 | £66,759 | £47,392 | £3,949 |
| 5 | £66,894 | £67,053 | £69,231 | £48,777 | £4,065 |
| 6 | £69,270 | £69,438 | £71,694 | £50,156 | £4,180 |
| 7 | £71,649 | £71,820 | £74,154 | £51,534 | £4,294 |
| 8 | £74,028 | £74,205 | £76,617 | £52,864 | £4,405 |
Depute Head and Head Teacher Scale
Depute heads and head teachers are paid on a 19-point scale. Where a post sits depends on the size and complexity of the school, set through the SNCT's job-sizing arrangements:
| Point | From 1 Aug 2025 | From 1 Apr 2026 | From 1 Aug 2026 | Take-home/yr | Take-home/mo |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | £65,058 | £65,214 | £67,332 | £47,713 | £3,976 |
| 2 | £67,059 | £67,218 | £69,402 | £48,872 | £4,073 |
| 3 | £69,270 | £69,438 | £71,694 | £50,156 | £4,180 |
| 4 | £71,649 | £71,820 | £74,154 | £51,534 | £4,294 |
| 5 | £74,028 | £74,205 | £76,617 | £52,864 | £4,405 |
| 6 | £76,035 | £76,218 | £78,696 | £53,966 | £4,497 |
| 7 | £78,246 | £78,435 | £80,985 | £55,179 | £4,598 |
| 8 | £80,451 | £80,646 | £83,268 | £56,389 | £4,699 |
| 9 | £82,638 | £82,839 | £85,530 | £57,588 | £4,799 |
| 10 | £84,843 | £85,047 | £87,810 | £58,797 | £4,900 |
| 11 | £88,509 | £88,722 | £91,605 | £60,808 | £5,067 |
| 12 | £92,106 | £92,328 | £95,328 | £62,781 | £5,232 |
| 13 | £95,559 | £95,790 | £98,904 | £64,676 | £5,390 |
| 14 | £98,973 | £99,210 | £102,435 | £66,000 | £5,500 |
| 15 | £102,633 | £102,879 | £106,224 | £67,156 | £5,596 |
| 16 | £107,325 | £107,583 | £111,078 | £68,636 | £5,720 |
| 17 | £111,057 | £111,324 | £114,942 | £69,815 | £5,818 |
| 18 | £115,605 | £115,884 | £119,649 | £71,250 | £5,938 |
| 19 | £120,162 | £120,450 | £124,365 | £72,689 | £6,057 |
The top of the scale, £124,365, sits in the Scottish advanced-rate band — and because the personal allowance tapers above £100,000, the marginal rate through that zone is punishing. The mechanics are the same trap described in the £100k tax trap, only at Scottish rates.
Distant Islands Allowance
Teachers employed by island councils, or whose place of employment is on one of the islands listed in the SNCT Handbook, are paid a Distant Islands Allowance of £2,997 a year (increased with effect from 1 October 2025). It is paid on top of the scale point and is taxable like the rest of your pay.
Scotland vs England: The Same Job, Different System
Scotland's 2026/27 figures (from 1 August 2026) against England's confirmed 2026/27 scale (STRB 3.5%, from 1 September 2026):
| Scotland | England | Difference | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting salary | £36,159 | £34,068 | +2,091 |
| First post-probation / year-2 point | £43,383 | £36,042 | +7,341 |
| Top of the main scale | £54,453 | £46,939 | +7,514 |
| Top of the classroom range | £66,759 | £52,835 | +13,924 |
| Top of the leadership range | £124,365 | £143,796 | −19,431 |
Three structural differences sit behind the numbers. Scotland pays probationers £36,159 — £2,091 more than an English M1 teacher — and the gap widens sharply at the year-2 point, because the Scottish scale front-loads pay. Scotland reaches its main-scale top in six years against England's eleven-plus. And there is no threshold application: no UPS to cross onto, no form to fill in — the scale simply runs to point 5. England claws some of it back at the very top: its L43 leadership maximum is £19,431 above Scotland's head teacher point 19. For the English figures in full, see teacher pay scales 2026/27; for Wales, the separate Welsh scale.
Scottish Teachers Pay Scottish Income Tax — and It Changes the Answer
If your main home is in Scotland you have an S-prefix tax code and pay Scottish income tax — six bands instead of three, with different rates and thresholds. Unlike Wales, where the devolved rates have been set identical to England, the Scottish rates genuinely differ, so the take-home columns above are calculated on the Scottish bands, not the England ones.
Two worked examples from the tables: at the top of the main grade scale (£54,453), Scottish income tax costs about £137 a month more than the same salary in England, because everything above the Scottish higher-rate threshold of £43,663 is taxed at 42% while England charges 20% up to £50,270. At the probationer point (£36,159) the position flips: the 19% starter rate makes Scottish tax about £-2 a month less. The crossover sits at about £33,493 — below it Scotland taxes slightly less, above it progressively more.
The Scottish Teachers' Pension
Scottish teachers are members of the Scottish Teachers' Pension Scheme, administered by the Scottish Public Pensions Agency (SPPA) — a separate scheme from the England & Wales Teachers' Pension Scheme, with its own tiered member contribution rates based on pay. The take-home columns on this page are before the pension deduction, so subtract your contribution tier from gross to see what actually reaches your bank account. The calculator lets you enter any pension percentage against any scale point.
Scotland Teacher Pay FAQs
What are the teacher pay scales in Scotland for 2026/27?
The SNCT scale in force from 1 August 2026: the main grade runs from £36,159 at point 0 (probationer) to £54,453 at point 5, with principal teachers on £59,367–£76,617 and head teachers up to £124,365. These figures apply until 31 July 2027 under the current SNCT agreement.
How much was the Scottish teacher pay rise?
The SNCT agreement covering 1 August 2025 to 31 July 2027 delivered 4% from 1 August 2025, rising to 4.25% from 1 April 2026, plus a further 3.25% from 1 August 2026 — roughly 7.6% compounded over the two years, with a re-opener clause for year two.
What does a probationer teacher earn in Scotland?
£36,159 from 1 August 2026, on point 0 of the main grade scale during the Teacher Induction Scheme year. After Scottish income tax and National Insurance that is about £2,461 a month, before pension. On completing probation, teachers move to point 1: £43,383.
Do teachers in Scotland earn more than in England?
At the start and through the main scale, clearly yes: a Scottish probationer earns £36,159 against England's M1 of £34,068, and Scotland's point 5 (£54,453) beats England's M6 (£46,939) — reached in six years, not eleven. Higher Scottish income tax claws part of it back above about £33,493.
Is there an upper pay scale in Scotland?
No. Scotland has no UPS and no threshold application. The main grade scale runs from point 0 to point 5; beyond that, higher pay comes from promoted posts — principal teacher, depute head, head teacher — or the conserved chartered teacher spine.
How much does a teacher in Scotland take home after tax?
On the top of the main grade scale, £54,453 gross is £40,501 a year or £3,375 a month after Scottish income tax and National Insurance, before pension. A probationer on £36,159 keeps about £2,461 a month.
What is the Distant Islands Allowance?
An allowance of £2,997 a year (from 1 October 2025) paid on top of salary to teachers employed by island councils or working on the islands listed in the SNCT Handbook. It is taxable pay like the rest of salary.
What is the highest teacher salary in Scotland?
Point 19 of the depute head and head teacher scale: £124,365 from 1 August 2026. After Scottish tax that is about £6,057 a month — the salary sits in the personal-allowance taper, so the marginal rate on it is severe.
