How SMP Works

First 6 weeks: You receive 90% of your average weekly earnings. Weeks 7-39: You receive the lower of £184.03/week or 90% of your average weekly earnings. Weeks 40-52: Unpaid (but your job is protected).

Eligibility

You must have worked for your employer for at least 26 weeks by the 15th week before your due date, and earn at least £123/week. SMP is paid like your salary and is subject to tax and NI deductions.

What This Calculator Does

This calculator shows your Maternity Pay entitlement week by week, covering the 39 weeks of SMP and any enhanced maternity pay your employer offers. It is designed for pregnant employees and employers calculating Statutory Maternity Pay entitlement.

How the Calculation Works

SMP pays 90% of your average weekly earnings for the first 6 weeks, then £184.03/week (or 90% of AWE if lower) for weeks 7-39. The remaining 13 weeks of maternity leave are unpaid. Employers claim back 92% (or 103% for small businesses) from HMRC.

Common Scenarios

On a £35,000 salary, SMP is approximately £8,600 over 39 weeks. Many employers enhance this: the Civil Service pays full pay for 26 weeks, while the NHS pays 8 weeks full pay and 18 weeks half pay plus SMP.
